Mansfield Park Essay Example For Students
Mansfield Park Essay Mansfield ParkThis novel, originally published in 1814, is the first of Jane Austens novels not to be arevised version of one of her pre-1800 writings. Mansfield Park has sometimes beenconsidered atypical of Jane Austen, as being solemn and moralistic, especially whencontrasted with the immediately preceding Pride and Prejudice and the immediatelyfollowing Emma. Poor Fanny Price is brought up at Mansfield Park with her rich uncleand aunt, where only her cousin Edmund helps her with the difficulties she suffers fromthe rest of the family, and from her own fearfulness and timidity. When thesophisticated Crawfords (Henry and Mary), visit the Mansfield neighbourhood, the moralsense of each marriageable member of the Mansfield family is tested in various ways, but Fanny emerges more or less unscathed. The well-ordered (if somewhat vacuous)house at Mansfield Park, and its country setting, play an important role in the novel, and are contrasted with the squalour of Fannys own birth familys ho me at Portsmouth, and with the decadence of London. Readers have a wide variety of reactions to Mansfield Park-most of which alreadyappear in the Opinions of Mansfield Park collected by Jane Austen herself soon after thenovels publication. Some dislike the character of Fanny as priggish (however, it isEdmund who sets the moral tone here), or have no sympathy for her forced inaction(doubtless, those are people who have never lacked confidence, or been without adate on Friday night!). Mansfield Park has also been used to draw connections betweenthe genteel rural English society that Jane Austen describes and the outside world, since Fannys uncle is a slave-owner (with an estate in Antigua in the Caribbean;slavery was not abolished in the British empire until 1833). Like a number of othertopics, Jane Austen only chose to allude glancingly to the slave trade and slavery inher novels, though she was aware of contemporary debates on the subject. MansfieldPark was one of only two of Jane Austens novels to be revised by her after its firstpubl ication, when a second edition came out in 1816 (this second edition was a failurein terms of sales). Style and Stylistics Essay Example For Students
Style and Stylistics Essay WHAT IS STYLE AND STYLISTICS? What is meant by style is debatable because it is highly debatable if human beings are exactly alike. It is very difficult to arrive at a full description of style that is acceptable to all scholars. As such there are many definitions of the word style as there are scholars yet no consensus is reached among them on what style is. Chapman (1973) is of the view that style is the product of social situation i. e. of a common relationship between language users. He further said that style is not an ornament or virtue and is not confined to written language, or to literature or to any single aspect of language. Language is human specific and used in society. No human language is fixed, uniform, or varying; all languages show internal variation. This variation sows the distinct feature of individuals or a group of people which is usually referred to as style. Style is popularly referred to as ââ¬Ëdressââ¬â¢ of thought, as a personââ¬â¢s method of expressing his thought feelings and emotions, as the manner of speech or writing. (Samson:1996). From the definition above, one can deduce that style is the particular way in which an individual communicate his thoughts which distinguishes him from others. Style can also be defined as the variation in an individualââ¬â¢s speech which is occasioned by the situation of use. (Yule: 1996) from the definition of style provided by Yule, style is described as the variations in language usage. In essence, style is conditioned by the manner in which an individual makes use of language Middleton is of the view that style refers to personal idiosyncrasy, the technique of exposition and Chatman says that style means manner ââ¬â the manner in which the form executed or the content expressed. From the definitions above, it can be deduced that style is unique to every individual or person and it is a product of the function of language as a means of communication. Thus, style can be described as the manner in which a writer addresses a matter. The way in which a writer writes which is also known as the writerââ¬â¢s style reveals the writerââ¬â¢s personality. A writerââ¬â¢s style is known by his choice of words, words patterns, graphological devices and major thematic pre- occupation. Style can also be defined as deviation from the norm. This definition is based on the standard or value. When this is applied to language, we realize that members of a society have agreed to use language in a particular way and any other usage aside this is seen as a deviant. In this vein, style is seen as any use of language which goes contrary to this agreement. Language is understood to be a code. A writerââ¬â¢s style is often expressed by the grammatical clauses and structures he prefers as by his choice of words. A breach of the code may result in an ungrammatical sentence or a deviant. The deviations which a writer is associated with are known as his style of writing. Style can also be described as the choices made in the process of writing. These choices are made consciously or unconsciously. The style of a writer is made manifest in his sentence form. For example, 1. The man died. 2. The man was murdered. 3. The man was assassinated. 4. The man gave up the ghost. From a cursory reading of the sentences written above, one can decipher that there is a difference in the attitude of the writerââ¬â¢s which is exhibited by their choice of words. For example, killed is neutral while murdered and assassinated is criminal. Also, the writerââ¬â¢s choice of word is also conditioned by his occupation which M. A. K Halliday has provided three situational categories for which are: mode, tenor, and field. Style is also used synonymously with register. When a user directs his artwork towards a particular style, he is adopting a register which may be deliberate and with awareness of a recognised style, as when a barrister speaks in court. When the same barrister engages in family talk, he will use a different one. .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .postImageUrl , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:hover , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:visited , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:active { border:0!important; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:active , .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981 .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uead28ff67cedc3f386beab71dd5ae981:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Causal Argument-Binge Drinking EssayA regular recurring of a register creates a style in the individual. Style is the particular way in which something is done. It is also the features which a work of art is known Linguistic is concerned with language as an observable phenomenon of human activity, both in its general principles and in the particular realizations which we call language. The linguistic study of different style with which human language is written is called stylistics. Linguistics and stylistics are complementary in the sense that we study the human language with a view to getting the meaning, style etc. Stylistics is a discipline devoted to the study of style. It may be defined as the systematic, methodical or scientific study of style. The word scientific is significant here as it relates to linguistics which is the science that investigates or describes languages and how it works. Turner (1973) describes stylistics as: that part of linguistics which concentrates on variation in the use of language, often, but not exclusively with special attention to the most conscious and complex uses of language in literature. Stylistics is the study of the uses of language in their various manifestations. The use of language in literature usually receives special attention in stylistics. Stylistics is interested in the analysis of the type and reason for choosing a given style in a language. It looks into how language is used grammatically, semantically, phonologically, morphologically and as discourse. Chapman (1973) defined stylistics as a part of sociolinguistics which in turn is the study of language in relation to society. Stylistics is concerned with the identification of the distinctive features of a variety of the peculiarities or idiosyncrasies of an author through the principles of linguistics. The Stylisticians (practitioners of stylistics) uses the principles of linguistics to single out the feature of language which are restricted to particular social contexts, and he accounts for reason(s) why such features are used when and where they are used. Stylistics according to Oxford Advanced Learnerââ¬â¢s Dictionary is ââ¬Å"the study of style and the methods used in written languageâ⬠. Stylistics can be defined as the study of the varieties of language usage. Stylistics can also be defined as the analysis and description of the features of style in literary texts. John Wilkes Booth Essays - Assassination Of Abraham Lincoln
Morianda Key Mr. Williams US History 13 April 2011 Dead or Alive? All through school we were taught that John Wilkes Booth was the man who shot Abraham Lincoln and, furthermore that Booth was hunted and killed on a farm on April 26, 1865. However, what if I told you John Wilkes Booth did not die on that day and he escaped and took the name of John St. Helen or David E. George? Would you believe me? Well, that is exactly what I am about to tell you. It has been reported and has been considered controversial that John Wilkes Booth did in fact not die on that day, but instead many years later. On April 14, 1865 John Wilkes Booth shot and murdered President Lincoln in the Ford theater, as he jumped from the balcony in his escape he broke his left leg as he hit the floor. Booth in the midst of all the confusion managed to escape on horseback and found a doctor by the name of Samuel Mudd who fixed the leg and sent him on his way. However, this is where history changes from what we were taught. It is said that he was shot and killed at the Garrett Farm; although some historians say and believe that John Wilkes Booth did not die, but that someone else did and Booth took on the name of John St. Helen. John St. Helen was a man who lived in Glen Rose, Texas as a bartender and local actor who took the stage with amazing skills and often recited Shakespeare with excellency. Helen lived in Glen Rose no less than a year until one of the local politicians daughter was getting married and she had invited several military officers and the US Marshal for Texas. When Helen received word of this he fled town quickly and left no trace of himself anywhere in Glen Rose. However, close to a year after his disappearance from Glen Rose, he showed up in Granbury, Texas and befriended a man by the name of Finis L. Bates. During this time as Bates and Helen were becoming good friends Bates began to notice something strange about Helen. Helen never was a drinker, but every April 14-the anniversary of President Lincoln?s death?he would get into a drunken stupor. Therefore, this led Bates to believe something was wrong with Helen. While living in Granbury John St. Helen became very sick and was announced by several doctors that he would die, meanwhile, Bates was standing by Helen?s bedside he thought he heard him say what sounded like a deathbed statement saying, ?My name, is not John St. Helen. I am John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln.? However, Helen recovered and instead of taking back what he had told Bates he left quickly leaving no sign of where he may have went. When Bates went back to the apartment Helen was staying in, he came across a Colt Pistol that was wrapped up in the newspaper that was issued announcing President Lincoln?s death. That was the last anyone heard of St. Helen that is until 1903, when a man by the name of David E. George showed up in Enid, Oklahoma. Within three weeks of living in Enid, George had already become known as a successful entertainer in reciting poetry, Mostly Shakespeare, in local bars while he would be drinking himself into a coma. Back in that time, you could go to your local drug stores and get just about any kind of heavy dosages of medication like morphine. Early one morning, George set out from the hotel and headed over to the local drug store and bought strychnine, saying he would use it to dispose of a stray dog. Instead, several days later George took the medicine and admitted while dying that he was also the man who killed Abraham Lincoln. George?s body was taken to W. B. Penniman's mortuary and furniture store. Then, a few days later, Penniman was at work on the body and the Harpers?a couple from El Reno?came in saying that they new George back before moving to Enid. Mrs. Harper said that George had once overdosed before. Just like John St Helen while he

I will be showing Waltonââ¬â¢s fallacies in the texts I use on ââ¬Å"Communication Between Divorced Parentsâ⬠. I will demonstrate by using Waltonââ¬â¢s fallacies how some parents remain friendly and put the children first in divorce situations. I will also demonstrate Waltonââ¬â¢s fallacies on how other parents donââ¬â¢t have anything good to say about each other and tend to put the children in the middle. I will then be able to understand the dynamics of divorced parents better and how miscommunication affects their future communications. Some problems can be overcome with planning and forethought, as we have seen, but this eventuality is difficult to guard against, the best advice being the fullest possible airing of views on every aspect of the topic before marriage (Shreeve, 89). I believe that this fits well with Waltonââ¬â¢s argument as a reasoned dialogue. In discussing these issues the couple will go through all types of dialogue: quarrel, debate, persuasion to get the other person to see their point, negotiation to come to an agreement, information seeking ââ¬â asking further questions, action seeking, and even educational. After applying Waltonââ¬â¢s dialogue they will have aired their views on every aspect of the topic of marriage. So thrash out the whole approach you should adopt with your partner beforehand. Ubiquitous Computing Technology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Ubiquitous Computing Technology - Essay Example Many researchers from whole world are at the present working in the ubiquitous computing structure. Their effort impacts all regions of computer science, including hardware components (like chips), interaction substrates, applications, privacy, network protocols and computational techniques (Banavar et al, 2002). Ubiquitous computing or normally called ââ¬Å"ubicompâ⬠is an away desktop or post desktop model of human computer interaction in which data and information processing has been comprehensively incorporated interested in daily life matters and actions. As different to the desktop working and processing, in which a sole user deliberately engages a single device for a meticulous task, someone "employingâ⬠ubiquitous computing employs several computational devices and systems at the same time, in the track of normal actions, and possibly will not essentially even be conscious that they are doing so (Stajano, 2002). Ubiquitous computing is the visualization of a world in which computing power and digital infrastructure are tremendously economical property, so low-priced they are entrenched in all the daily things that enclose us. We can say that ubiquitous computing is not virtual reality, it is not a Personal Digital Assistant or PDA like Apples Newton, and it is not an individual or friendly computer with agents responsible for your bidding. Different from virtual reality, ubiquitous computing actions to put together information exhibit into the daily physical world. It believed that nuances of the authentic world to be magnificent, and plans plainly to augment them. Unlike PDAs, ubiquitous computing visualizes a world of completely associated devices, with inexpensive wireless networks all over the place (Kenneth, 1998); unlike PDAs, it is assumed that you are required nothing with you, because information will be available all over the place. Unlike the intimate agent computer that reacts t o ones tone or voice and is an individual

International and Comparative Employment Relations Essay
International and Comparative Employment Relations - Essay Example The works on the labour standards and race to bottom are rather limited in the existing literature. Developed countries are now under the radar as there have been evidences that OECD countries are compromising on their labour protection issue. Many multinational companies like Foxconn are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to the unfair labour practices promoted by them (Chan, 2013). The purpose of this essay is to discuss the optimal labour standards mechanisms that should be developed by multinational companies so that they can qualify to be sustainable. The essay first establishes the problem that is being faced by the labourers and then discusses possible measures to improve the situation. The problem of race to bottom in labour market has been traced to the collective bargaining power of the labourers. The research conducted by Javorcik and Spatareanu (2011) had shown that multinational companies have been greatly deterred to enter into countries which have high labour costs on account of collective bargaining, a condition which is largely prevalent in the developed countries. The research conducted by Davies and Vadlamannati (2013) had shown that OECD countries have greatly relaxed their labour practices and joined the race to bottom. Their research had pointed out that it is not the labour laws which have gone through changes. It is rather the labour practices related to the enforcement of labour laws which have been hampered to a great extent. This behaviour of the countries can be directly seen as an attempt to attract higher Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Similar findings were also made by Olney (2010) and he had observed that nations are engaged in a cut thro at competition with one another to reduce labour standards.
